POMFRET — In a unanimous vote Wednesday night, the Pomfret Town Board approved the formation of the North End Water District.

The architectural and engineering firm Wendel Duchscherer of Amherst was authorized to draft final plans for the district. The board and the firm have been working on the scope of the water district for more than two years.

Supervisor Donald Steger pointed out that approval of the district “has been a long time coming,” and he is happy the town will finally provide “a safe and ample water supply” for residents of the new district.

The first phase of the project will extend municipal water, purchased from Fredonia, to areas along Routes 20 and 60, as well as Webster Road. Water service will be provided to more than 200 residences and about 130 mobile homes that will be connected by 55,000 feet of water line.

The line along Route 20 will run from the Town of Portland line to one in the Town of Sheridan and be ready for any potential future regionalization of water. Phase One will cost about $4 million. Single-family homes in the district will pay about $500 annually. Yearly charges for mobile homes are expected to be less than $500 and commercial properties more.

On another issue, Cara Seekings, secretary of the Lily Dale Assembly, said Lily Dale is applying for $3,300 to $5,000 in county bed tax money to help fund an event dubbed “stay-cation,” scheduled for the weekend of May 28-31, 2010. The total event budget is $15,000.

The assembly is hoping to get the support of the town and also hoping to involve area tourism businesses in the activities. A print media campaign also will be developed, including advertising in Buffalo, Toronto, Cleveland, Erie, Pa., and Pittsburgh. Lily Dale, she said, is host to more than 35,000 tourists each summer.

In other business:

• A free rabies clinic will be held from 1 to 3 p. m. Saturday at the town barn on Chautauqua Road. Pet owners are asked to bring verification of a pet’s last rabies shot for a three-year vaccination. Without verification, the pet will receive a one-year vaccination.

• Councilwoman Pat Christina extended an invitation to residents 55 and older to make use of the town’s senior center at the former St. Anthony’s School on Moore Avenue. She said there are many activities, including a Wii with sports programs, exercise equipment and exercise classes, line dancing and art instruction.

• The Town Board meets next in a work session beginning at 6:30 p. m. June 3 in Town Hall.
