CATTARAUGUS COUNTY
Voters throughout area will head out Wednesday for village elections
LITTLE VALLEY — A dozen villages in Cattaraugus County will hold elections from noon to 9 p. m. Wednesday to choose seven mayors, two justices and 20 trustees.
One trustee spot in the Village of Cattaraugus will remain open after the election due to the late withdrawal of uncontested candidate David J. Rivet, a Cattaraugus County department head who recently was found ineligible to hold elected office under the Hatch Act. Rivet was an elected trustee for four years before he ran and won a two-year term as mayor. He will step down from that office March 31.
Rivet said he was unaware that he was in violation of the Hatch Act as commissioner of public works — which he thought applied to federal employees. He learned, however, that he manages state Department of Transportation funds appropriated by the federal government.
Village Board officials will have to decide whether to appoint someone to fill the vacancy or hold a special election.
