Drinking water mystery in Fredonia discussed

CHAUTAUQUA CORRESPONDENT

FREDONIA — Discussion continued Monday night at the Fredonia Village Board meeting about the mystery of the rusty-appearing drinking water at many of the residences on Carol Avenue.

About 10 Carol Avenue residents were on hand to assist in the discussion and brought with them two petitions, each signed by more than 80 Carol Avenue residents, requesting something be done to correct the street’s poor water quality and its lack of proper street drainage.

Not all of the homes experience murky drinking water, it was noted, and this is one of the puzzles.

Mayor Michael Sullivan said the village is going to see if the problem is coming from the village water line along the street.

Streets Department Superintendent Jack Boland has ordered an auto-flusher for Carol Avenue. He will have to cut a piece out of the street’s water line to install it. At that time he will inspect the pipe’s interior for any corrosion problems.

Sullivan said, as a last resort only, the village may have to check the individual service laterals running into the homes from the street pipe. Many of the homes, he said, were built around the same time and may have corrosion. This could be why not all of the houses are getting rusty water. He reiterated this would only be as a last resort.

Carol Avenue residents also spoke about the need for better street drainage. Trustees Michelle Twichell and Joseph Cerrie directed Boland to clear Carol Avenue of any fallen leaves today. One Carol Avenue resident said the village crews did not pick up raked and bagged leaves on Carol, and they eventually fell into the drainage ditches and clogged them.

In other business, the board said it will once again contact TVGA of Elma, an engineering firm, to see if and when they will work to update the village’s comprehensive plan.

The board meets again Monday for a workshop session at 6:30 p. m. and a regular meeting at 7:30, both in Village Hall.
