Firefighters from 4 counties honor colleague who died
CORFU — Volunteer firefighters from four counties filled the Pembroke Community Center on Monday to honor an East Pembroke Fire Department colleague who died last week while on duty at an accident scene.
Norman C. Koch, 79, had more than 59 years of volunteer service with fire departments in Alexander and Corfu before joining the East Pembroke department in 1987. He held the title of captain and district fire commissioner.
Koch suffered a fatal heart attack while directing traffic Dec. 30 at a minor vehicle accident in the Town of Batavia.
More than 150 colleagues, friends and family attended the service at the Corfu Fire Headquarters. About 20 trucks and emergency service vehicles lined Route 33 outside the building. A procession of fellow volunteers accompanied his casket to Hillside Cemetery, East Pembroke, for the burial service.
