Honors mark retirement of Roberts from 2 posts
SILVER CREEK— F. Thomas Roberts, who served as voting machine custodian and a member of the Town of Hannover’s Planning Board, was honored Tuesday for many years of community service.
Roberts announced his retirement from both positions. He served as custodian of the town’s voting machines since 1973. He was also honored by Terry Niebel, who retires as the Chautauqua County election inspector today.
The Roberts family owned vineyards in the area. He has been an active firefighter serving with Hanover Hose Company for 50 years. He also was a member of the Silver Creek School Board and served as the board’s president.
Town Supervisor Kathy Tampio made the presentation in front of family and friends at the Hanover Town Board meeting. The supervisor said she will be accepting letters of interest from those who would like to fill Roberts’ seat on the Planning Board.
In other matters, Highway Superintendent Steven D’Angelo expressed his concerns about the maintenance of the Chautauqua County roads in the town. D’Angelo said the road conditions have been, “absolutely terrible.” He said town snowplow drivers have had to plow some county roads in order to make them passable.
He said he questioned county crews and was told that they would not be allowed to work overtime.
County Legislator Jerry Park said he would take the message back to county officials at his next meeting. Tampio said she would write letters about the issue to the county.
D’Angelo said the lack of snowplowing and salting on the roads is a safety concern.
The board also accepted the resignation of Dana Tietz from the Zoning Board. People interested in serving on that board should send a letter to the Town Board.
The board will hold its reorganization-al meeting at 7 p. m. Jan. 5.
