Cable TV channels to change in Dunkirk

CHAUTAUQUA CORRESPONDENT

DUNKIRK — Cable television subscribers in the Dunkirk area will be losing four channels and getting two replacements, it was announced Tuesday night during a meeting of the Dunkirk Common Council.

Danny McGill, Cable Television Advisory Committee chairman, urged customers of Time Warner Cable to write or call the company and complain about the loss of channels WICU, WSEE, WPIX and Global CIII. A CNN international channel and CSPAN3 will be added.

McGill said he received notification of the changes in a letter Tuesday. He said the changes are effective Dec. 31.

“It is my duty to make the public aware of these changes, and I urge you to contact Time Warner,” said McGill, who added that he fears the city will lose revenue if cable subscribers switch to satellite dish. The city receives a portion of the cable television revenue through Time Warner.

In other matters, the board engaged in a heated debate over the animal control and parking ticket contract awarded to Wally Baker of Silver Creek. The $2,000-per-month contract was awarded in a 3-2 vote. Councilman Robert George and Councilwoman Rose Floramo voted against the measure.

Floramo said she had received numerous complaints about Baker, adding that the city could hire an employee for the same rate of pay.

Councilman at Large James Muscato noted that Baker uses his own vehicle and is on call at all times.

Baker’s monthly report for November includes 300 parking tickets and responding to several complaints about dogs.

Councilman A. J. Dolce said he reviewed responsibilities of the animal control officer and said that there are some situations that are not his responsibility — including rats, bats, mice and skunks in the home. He also noted that raccoons and possums that invade homes are part of his job. However, geese and other birds are not covered by the contract.

Residents who have an issue with an animal can call the Dunkirk Police Department, which will notify Baker.

Councilman Kevin Muldowney announced the stores at the Boardwalk Market at the pier will be open through the holiday season, except on Mondays.
