Remnants of Ike knock out power across the area
More than 8,000 National Grid customers in Western New York lost power late Sunday as the remnants of Hurricane Ike passed through the area, bringing heavy rain and high winds in its wake.
Just over 3,900 customers in Erie County were without power as of 11:15 p. m., including 1,581 on hard-hit Grand Island and 1,089 in Amherst, National Grid reported on its Web site.
The utility estimated that power would be fully restored in Erie County by 2:30 a. m. today.
In Chautauqua County, another 3,000 customers were powerless, led by the 1,940 customers who had lost electricity in the Town of Ellery.
And in Cattaraugus County, nearly 2,200 customers were without power, primarily in the towns of Carrollton, Portville and Ashford. Hundreds of customers in Niagara and Allegany counties also had lost power.
