Oakfield man accused in scrap metal thefts
BATAVIA — An Oakfield man was arrested Wednesday on two felony counts of grand larceny following a nine-month investigation into thefts of scrap metal in Oakfield, according to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office.
Roy D. Hooten, 47, was arrested at his Gibson Avenue home. He is accused of stealing copper wiring and other metals from power substations owned by National Grid, U. S. Gypsum and Allen’s Foods on at least seven occasions.
Deputies said Hooten would enter the stations’ fenced areas and cut heavy grounding cables. The wires were then sold as scrap metal.
Hooten was arraigned before Town of Batavia Justice Thomas D. William and jailed in lieu of $1,500 cash bail.
