Five children injured in Stafford collision
STAFFORD — Five children escaped major injury Monday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision in the Town of Stafford that seriously injured a Le Roy woman, Genesee County sheriff’s officials reported.
Police said Rachel L. Heywood, 34, of Warsaw, who had her three children in the vehicle, failed to stop her Buick SUV at a stop sign at Randall and Buckley roads at about 2:15 p. m. and crashed broadside into a Volkswagen driven by 45-year-old Deborah S. Hughes of Le Roy.
After the collision, Heywood’s Buick went off the road, rolled over and came to rest on its passenger side. Hughes’ Volkswagen went off the road and struck a tree.
Hughes, her son, James, 12, and daughter, Kathryn, 15, were taken by separate Mercy Flight helicopters to Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester. Hughes was listed in serious condition with a head injury. The two children were treated for minor injuries.
Heywood suffered a broken left ankle and other minor injuries. Her three children — Madison, 4; Haley, 10; and Andrew, 12 — reported only minor injuries.
Heywood was ticketed for failure to yield the right of way at a stop sign.
