Holley sewage worker sickened by chlorine leak

Story tools:

A chlorine leak in the Village of Holley sewage treatment plant Friday morning sickened a worker, Holley Fire Department officials said.

At 8:50 a. m., a worker at the sewage plant called 911. He said that when he arrived at work, he was overcome by a gas but was able to escape the building.

Holley firefighters tended to the man at the scene and transported him to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where he was treated and released.

In the meantime, Holley firefighters, along with rescuers with the Kodak Fire Department hazmat team, Monroe County Fire Bureau hazmat team and the Orleans County special response team, arrived at the plant. They discovered that a chlorine gas vessel was leaking but that gas did not get out of the building.

Several firefighters were treated at the scene for heat-related illnesses. Two were transported to Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Brockport, where they were released after treatment.
