Lily Dale board seeks to discuss options for new well with Pomfret

Story tools:

FREDONIA — The Lily Dale Assembly Board would like to have a discussion regarding the Dale’s plentiful, recently drilled water well, Supervisor Donald Steger told the Pomfret Town Board on Wednesday night. No date has been set for the two boards to meet.

There were no specifics attached to the discussion. Supervisor Steger said perhaps Lily Dale might be interested in creating a water district. Steger also said he hoped the Dale would consider metering its water users. This, he said, would allow the town to more equitably and accurately bill Lily Dale residents for the sewage treatment system serving the Dale.

Lily Dale recently drilled a well to supply water to the small community and got more than bargained for when the well entered an aquifer at a depth of 349 feet.

The well now produces 70 gallons of water a minute with its current test pump. This more than meets Lily Dale’s demands, according to officials in the Dale. The well can produce even more with a larger pump, perhaps 240 gallons a minute. Lily Dale had been purchasing water from the Cassadaga village water system.

In other business, the board:

• Commended Lily Dale for the success of its recent Town of Pomfret Day celebration. This coming weekend, Lily Dale will hold its Victorian Weekend with a number of events and activities planned.

• Will meet in special session at 6:30 p. m. next Wednesday in Town Hall to discuss the proposed Webster Road area water district with the town-appointed engineers, Wendel Duchscherer of Amherst. It was noted that the Town Board, which has asked the Fredonia Village Board to sell it water for the proposed district, still has not been given a definitive answer.

• Heard that the Chestnut Water District is experiencing an elevated level of certain contaminants. Due to this, the pipes are being flushed once a week.

• Approved a proposal by Councilwoman Pat Christina to contribute $300 to the City of Dunkirk to help defray the costs of the city’s recent Fourth of July fireworks display.

• Heard that the town’s Grape Belt Senior Citizen program received the donation of a 64-inch television set. The group is now raising funds for a Wii computer gaming system.
