Polling places get grants to increase accessibility

KILL BUCK — The Kill Buck Fire Department is one of 12 polling places in Cattaraugus County to share in $34,594 in state and federal grants to make facilities handicapped-accessible.

Kill Buck is the only fire department recipient of the money and was awarded $5,661 to install a new entrance and place for handicapped people to unload and park while voting.

Towns receiving money to upgrade polling places with signs, parking, access buzzers at entrances and other renovations include: Carrollton, Coldspring, Dayton, East Otto, Farmersville, Great Valley, Humphrey, Leon, Randolph, Salamanca and South Valley.

County Elections Commissioner Kevin Burleson, who wrote the grant applications, said all modifications were made with recommendations from Howard Cornwall of Directions for Independent Living of Olean.
