Olean’s Snyder takes GOP reins

Story tools:

ELLICOTTVILLE — Paula Snyder of Olean was unanimously elected Tuesday as the first woman to head the Cattaraugus County Republican Committee.

Snyder was unanimously elected. After voting by committeemen, she took over the business session that included distribution of candidate nominating petitions for the November elections.

A registered nurse, Snyder is director of college health services for Jamestown Community College, where she evaluates and implements all health-related services and programs for the college at all sites.

Snyder has a political background that includes serving on the Olean City Council from 1994 to 2002 and an unsuccessful bid for mayor of Olean.

Her community service includes president of the board of directors of the Kathi Ward Foundation for Nursing Practice; board member of the Girl Scouts of Southwestern New York; co-chairman of the $1.4 million capital campaign to refurbish the Girl Scout Camp Timbercrest in Randolph; and chairman of the board of Universal Primary Care.

Snyder replaces Jerry E. Burrell of Franklinville as chairman. He resigned last month for personal reasons and is also a county legislator representing District 5.

Snyder is married to James

J. Snyder of Olean, also a county legislator.

She said she is “really excited and humbled and ready to go.”

The committee also appointed delegates to the 8th Judicial District Convention, naming local attorneys Thomas Brady, Bert Dohl and Mark Williams.
