EDUCATIONAL FORUM: Wendy Sanflippo, recycling educator from Chautauqua County Cornell Cooperative Extension, will be offering tips to set up a compost pile at 6:30 p. m. today at Portville Free Library, 2 North Main St.

POPPIES SALE: Members of Amherst Township Post 416, Veterans of Foreign Wars, will be selling poppies at Quality Markets and various businesses during the month of May. Donations will help the needy and disabled veterans and their families.

REMEMBRANCE SERVICE: VA Western New York Healthcare System will hold a service at 2 p. m. Friday in Room 301 at its Buffalo site, 3495 Bailey Ave., in remembrance of the Holocaust. The service commemorates National Day of Remembrance for victims of the Holocaust, where approximately 6 million Jews perished. Robert Eisen, representative of the Greater Buffalo Holocaust Resource Center, will be the keynote speaker. For details, call 862-8753.

EVENT: The Alzheimer’s Association’s 14th annual Blue Moon Gala will take place at 6 p. m. Friday in the Hyatt Regency Buffalo. This year’s “All That Glitters” theme will feature live music from Lance Diamond and his 24 Karat Diamond Band, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, a dinner, theme basket raffles, live and silent auctions, and much more. All proceeds will support programs and services of the Western New York chapter. To purchase tickets, call 626-0600.

COUNTRY DANCE: The Akron High School Student Council is sponsoring a country dance from 7 to 10 p. m. Friday as a benefit for the Akron/ Newstead food pantry. Music will be provided by Craig Wilkins and the Western New Yorkers Band. Admission is $6 and donations of nonperishable foods are also being accepted for donation to the food pantry. A silent auction of theme baskets will also be held during the event in the school cafeteria.

HIGGINS OUTREACH: The office of Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo, will present “Congress on Your Corner,” which offers satellite hours for residents of Chautauqua County. Representatives will be on hand to answer residents’ questions Friday from 9 to 11 a. m. at Brocton Village Hall, 87 West Main St.; 11:30 a. m. to noon at Herbert Star Apartments, 54 Central Ave.; and 1 to 3 p. m. at Dunkirk City Hall, 342 Central Ave. For more information, call 484-0729.

OPEN HOUSE: Covenant Academy, 345 McConkey Drive, Town of Tonawanda, will host an open house for prospective students and their families to meet the faculty and staff from noon to 3 p. m. Saturday.
