‘Top Hat’ ceremony set to open shipping season

ST. CATHARINES, Ont.—The Welland Canals Centre will reopen Tuesday with the traditional “Top Hat” ceremony aimed at marking the start of the shipping season.

The event recognizes the first ship to travel through the Welland Canal this season. It also celebrates both the 180th anniversary of the Welland Canal and the 50th anniversary of the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a. m. Tuesday at the Welland Canals Centre at Lock 3.
