Drug disposal effort set today at fire department

Story tools:

Safely dispose of unwanted medicine from 9 a. m. to 1 p. m. today at the Getzville Fire Department, 630 Getzville Road off Dodge Road in Amherst.

The Pharmaceutical Collection Day is an effort to keep drugs from being misused by young people and to prevent medicine from contaminating the water supply, according to event sponsors, the University at Buffalo’s School of Pharmacy and Assemblyman Jim Hayes, R-Amherst.

The UB school does not advise flushing unwanted prescriptions and medicine. Research has found drug traces get into drinking water from sewage systems.
