Adams is appointed Kenmore prosecutor

Story tools:

Kenmore lawmakers held their annual reorganization meeting Tuesday, speeding through a lengthy agenda that was, largely, full of familiar names.

But a new name is Eugene P. Adams, who was appointed to a one-year term as village prosecutor. He succeeds Scott F. Riordan, who was elected village justice in November.

Speaking of the November elections, the results were finalized, certified and posted just this week by the Erie County Board of Elections.

Riordan won the race for the year remaining on the justice term, defeating Kevin T. Stocker by a vote of 3,888 to 2,973. Paul Catalano, who was unchallenged in his bid to complete an unfinished term on the Village Board, received 5,285 votes.

Because Adams’ appointment wasn’t approved until Tuesday night, the evening’s court session was canceled.

For the time being, Tracey A. Bannister was reappointed as acting village justice. Last month, Bannister won a seat on State Supreme Court.

“She’s going to be acting until she resigns,” Mayor Patrick Mang said. The resignation is expected later this month.

In other business Tuesday, the Village Board voted unanimously in favor of a local law granting property tax exemptions for Cold War veterans.

Provisions are identical to legislation adopted recently by Erie County and the Town of Tonawanda.

Qualified veterans will receive exemptions of up to 15 percent of their primary home’s assessment. The exemption applies to village taxes only, although veterans also may apply for the same exemption on their county taxes.

Also Tuesday, Village Clerk/Treasurer Kathleen Johnson announced that the television franchise agreement between the village and Verizon New York has been approved by the state Public Service Commission.
