Police Foundation announces Safe Schools Initiative plans
The Amherst Police Foundation has announced plans for its Safe Schools Initiative for next year.
The foundation, established in 2001 to support the purchase of cutting-edge technology and training for the Amherst police, plans to buy ballistic shields and command-post management equipment that will improve the department’s response capabilities.
The new initiative also will include sponsoring a full day of training in January for law enforcement personnel, educators, emergency managers and others concerned with the safety of public and private schools and colleges in the town.
Since its inception, the foundation has bought a command vehicle and trailer, a Segway for use at public events and various hardware and software to help with photographic enhancement and crime-and accident-scene reconstruction. The foundation also provides scholarships each year for officers pursuing career-related education.
