TOWN OF TONAWANDA
Timely budget approval hikes property taxes
A couple of years after the Town of Tonawanda’s annual budget was adopted by default, lawmakers unanimously approved a 2009 spending plan before the Thursday state deadline.
Only one change was made between the time Supervisor Anthony F. Caruana presented the tentative $85.8 million budget in early October and lawmakers approved it a month later. The board approved special assessments totaling $3,489.14 for the cleanup of 19 properties.
Under the adopted budget, annual property taxes on a home assessed at $50,000 would be $1,143.76 — an increase of $32.49. In terms of the daily cost, that’s $3.13 — a 9-cent increase.
The town’s 2007 budget was adopted by default. After voting against the preliminary budget, the board considered many amendments but failed to act on a revised spending plan before the deadline.
