Grand Island man faces DWI charge

Story tools:

After spotting a vehicle with only three wheels pulling into a driveway on Grand Island, Erie County sheriff’s deputies arrested the driver late Thursday night on charges of driving while intoxicated and several other counts.

Deputies Daniel Milbrandt and Michael Haug had been investigating a minor property-damage accident at about 11 p. m. on Staley Road when the vehicle pulled into an driveway on East River Road.

They said they stopped Thaddeus Szczepaniak, 52, as he attempted to enter his home, but he fought with them and had to be subdued.

He also refused a breath test, sheriff’s officials said, and his license had been revoked after a prior alcohol conviction.

In addition to driving while intoxicated, Szczepaniak was charged with driving with a revoked license, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration, according to police records.
