Utility pole on Island struck by lightning
Lightning struck a utility pole Tuesday evening on Grand Island, causing lots of smoke and sparks and a localized power outage.
Grand Island fire officials said that at 6:20 p. m., in the middle of a torrential downpour, a bolt of lightning struck a pole on Whitehaven Road, across the street from the Cannon Design offices.
Firefighters responded, but the rain put out the fire. They waited until a National Grid crew arrived to make repairs. Slightly more than 200 Grand Island households were without power, according to National Grid.
