Akron increases sewer rates
The Akron Village Board on Monday increased sewer rates following a hearing at which no one from the public spoke.
Effective July 1, the rate will be $18.75 for less than 5,000 gallons of usage, up from $16.25; and $3.75 per 1,000 gallons in excess of 5,000 gallons, up from $3.25.
Clerk-Treasurer Daniel Borchert said the rate increase “will help fund our 45 percent contribution” to the capital improvement project at the wastewater plant.
Rock Construction of Corfu is general contractor on the job, which includes building a heated storage facility for equipment and enclosing a sludge drying bed.
The new rates will be reflected in the Oct. 15 billing, Borchert said.

• Heard Village Attorney Daniel Shonn say a draft of an intermunicipal agreement on the proposed Akron/Newstead public works complex would be forwarded to board members today. He urged that board members give a close reading to the document based on a similar arrangement between the Village and Town of Clayton.
“Your suggestions will be helpful,” Shonn said.
Mayor Carl Patterson said the Shared Municipal Facilities Committee will meet next week to review new figures and other information from Wendel Duchscherer Architects & Engineers on the two plans: a new building on town-owned land on Buell Street or retrofitting the former Northeast Caisson site on Indian Falls Road.
Both boards are expected to meet on July 7 to discuss the latest information on the project and review the intermunicipal agreement.
• Directed Police Chief Richard Lauricella to look into complaints about noise from a Main Street tavern the board did not identify.
Patterson and Trustee E. Peter Forrestel reported receiving an irate call early last Sunday from a neighbor of the establishment complaining about noise.
Forrestel said he contacted state police, who said the call would be referred to the village Police Department. Lauricella said he “didn’t see anything in the logbook, but I will look into it.”
• Learned from Public Works Superintendent Robert Kowalik that installation of the new water main on John Street is about half done. Patterson and Trustee Michael Middaugh said the village DPW crews are doing a good job and no complaints have been received about the work.
• Turned down a request from a member of Boy Scout Troop 559 to paint house numbers on curbs as part of an Eagle Scout project, noting they would be visible only in good weather and the paint was likely to quickly erode. Trustee William Kaufman, active with the Akron Lions Club, said he would contact the youth and suggest an alternate project.
