Pedestrians must steer clear of Peet Street bridge

Story tools:

ROYALTON—The state Department of Transportation announced Monday that, effective immediately, the Peet Street bridge over the Erie Canal will be closed to pedestrians until further notice.

The bridge was closed to vehicular traffic in 1997, but remained open to pedestrians. A recent bridge inspection revealed further structural deterioration. In the interest of public safety, the bridge has been closed to all traffic, including pedestrians.

There was no word on whether the bridge might be repaired or torn down.
