History Center grant to help restore engraving
LOCKPORT—The History Center of Niagara has received a $2,400 grant to help restore and conserve a 187-year-old engraving.
The 5-foot-wide engraving was authorized in 1822 as part of the engineering work for the construction of the Erie Canal. Titled “A Geological Profile Extending From the Atlantic to Lake Erie,” it shows all the changes in geology from Boston Harbor to Buffalo, History Center Executive Director Melissa Dunlap said.
The grant from the Lower Hudson Conference of Historical Agencies and Museums was used to hire a professional conservator, Tracy Dulniak of Great Lakes Art Conservation of Grand Island. Her work is expected to be complete early next year, after which the engraving will be framed and put on view in the Erie Canal Discovery Center.
