Blast, small fire contained at Lockport chemical plant

Story tools:

LOCKPORT—A small explosion and fire at the VanDeMark Chemical Corp. plant Friday resulted in no injuries and an undetermined amount of damage.

Fire Department Capt. Lou Farina said workers at the North Transit Road plant were cleaning a stainless steel tank with a solvent called toluene at about 6 p. m., when a chemical reaction occurred.

“A small fire was extinguished by plant personnel,” Farina said. “There was a little cloud of brown smoke upon our arrival. It dissipated as quickly as we got there.”
