Storm causes power outages in Lewiston, Cambria area
LEWISTON—Hail or lightning may have caused power failures that affected nearly 1,300 people in the Lewiston and Cambria area Monday afternoon.
Lightning hit a high tension line just after 1:30 p. m. in Pekin, on Upper Mountain Road at Old Pekin Hill.
Pekin volunteer firefighters said they were on the scene for more than half an hour.
Firefighters were unsure whether the lightning strike or heavy hail caused the utility wire to burn.
Heavy rain also accompanied the storm.
By 2:30 p. m., generators were being used for traffic signals along Center Street in the Village of Lewiston.
The skies cleared quickly, and National Grid officials had power restored before 5:30 p. m.
More than 1,045 village residents lost power, as well as 209 in the Town of Lewiston and another 95 in Cambria, officials said.
