SANBORN — A one-year contract extension was given to School Superintendent Carl Militello on Wednesday by the Niagara Wheatfield School Board.

The board voted, 6-1, to add another year to the three-year contract with Militello, who was hired last Aug. 1.

After the meeting, Militello, whose salary is $155,000, said no terms of the contract were changed but items such as pay would be reviewed in a separate process later.

He thanked the community and staff members for their cooperation and support in achieving a number of accomplishments, such as the ninth-grade academy, universal prekindergarten, an SAT preparation course, as well as a three-year contract with the Niagara Wheatfield Teachers Association.

Voting against the extension was board Vice President Maureen Kaus, who asked that the item be voted on separately instead of as part of a group of dozens of personnel matters as scheduled on the agenda. Kaus said the remaining two years in his original contract was “sufficient at this point.”

In another personnel matter, the board accepted the resignation of senior high school Principal Donald Mills, effective June 30.

Militello said Mills, who was hired two years ago, is leaving for a similar post in Ithaca.

The board went into executive session after the regular meeting to discuss how to conduct a search for a replacement.

The board also voted to approve the accelerated summer school program that starts this year as a one-year pilot instead of as a permanent program.

During a lengthy discussion, the superintendent said he preferred the program be approved without the time restriction because it always could be modified. He said the gesture would have fostered continued trust between the board and staff.

Member Samuel Monin said that without the limit, the agreement for the program would have become a permanent fixture in the contract and the district would have been stuck with it.

The program agreement runs through June 30, 2010, and can be renewed at that time, it was noted.
