NIAGARA COUNTY

Legislature passes resolution in support of Buffalo Bills

Story tools:

The Niagara County Legislature passed a “Niagara Bills” resolution Tuesday, but it was far different from the one promoted last month by Glenn Fitzgerald, a Williamsville man who thought a stadium in Niagara Falls would make the Buffalo Bills more likely to draw Canadian fans and keep the pro football team in this area.

The resolution specifies that Niagara County supports keeping the team in Erie County and wants to work with Erie County in any effort to keep the team from moving. However, the resolution still says that if the Bills decide to move, the Niagara County Legislature favors placing them in Niagara County.

“It does not offer any county taxpayer dollars at all. It’s just an idea,” said Legislator Jason J. Cafarella, D-Niagara Falls.

The Bills have a lease at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park through the 2012 season, but owner Wilson, 90, has said the team will be sold to the highest bidder when he dies. That has led to fears the Buffalo area will lose the team.
