VILLAGE OF LEWISTON

Club is OK’d for festival street closings

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Garden Club has obtained approval from the Village Board to close Center Street and a section of Fifth Street for part of its Garden Fest summer festival.

Mayor Richard F. Soluri told The Buffalo News last week that next year will be the first time that the popular event, scheduled for June 27-28, will be allowed to close the street for its festival during the day.

But there was a hitch.

“We couldn’t approve closing the street on a Friday night when restaurants are their busiest,” Soluri said. “But booths can start setting up early Saturday at 4 a. m. or 6 a. m.”

Officials hope that by closing Center Street and having vendors off the sidewalks, the foot traffic will have better access to the shops, the mayor said.

“It’s a trade-off, but the Garden Club is very sensitive to the needs of business. This festival is in its fourth year, and it’s growing in stature,” Soluri said.

The board also approved establishing an electronic recycling center at Lewiston Landing on North Water Street.

Several sites were rejected — including the volunteer fire company, because of traffic concerns in cases of a fire emergency, and the basketball area at Village Hall, because of concerns about court damage. There are plans to put in a horseshoe path at Lewiston Landing so that residents can pull in, drop off recycling items and leave, Soluri said.

The recycling area is expected to be open Saturdays mornings in January for a four-to five-hour period, Soluri said.

Niagara County is expected to pick up electronic wastes, such as computers, monitors, cell phones, computer chips, fax machines, laptop computers, electric wire, telephones, keyboards, computer mice, and even barbecue grills and 20-pound propane tanks.

Soluri said the list of items that can be recycled and the hours of operation will be publicized before the January start-up.
