Cheektowaga-Sloan schools plan 1.4 percent tax rate hike

NEWS STAFF REPORTER

Story tools:

Cheektowaga-Sloan School District residents would see a slight increase in taxes under the proposed budget adopted by the School Board.

After the dust settled from the passage of the federal stimulus package and the state budget, district administrators were able to put together a budget with a tax rate increase of 1.4 percent.

“The stimulus money is what saved us. Obviously we would have been hurt without it,” Superintendent James P. Mazgajewski said.

He said the district’s programs will remain intact. The district expects to lose one teacher’s aide position to retirement, and it will not fill the vacancy, he said.

The proposed 2009-10 budget is $31.17 million, up 2.89 percent from this year.

It carries a tax rate of $43.89 per $1,000 of assessed value for Cheektowaga residents and $56.09 per $1,000 for residents living in West Seneca.

Mazgajewski said under the governor’s deficit reduction plan, the district would have lost more than $500,000, which would have increased the tax rate by about $2.

There are several candidates for School Board seats. Mark Marek, Peter Melin and Sandra Kuzara are vying for a five-year term being vacated by Daniel M. Lach.

Denise McCowan is unopposed to fill the remaining two years in the seat held by Thomas DelBello, who resigned.

Residents will vote Tuesday.
