VILLAGE OF LANCASTER
Update of Lancaster village code soon will be online
Need to know if it’s legal to own two dogs or three?
Or if it’s OK to shovel snow into the street?
Soon, Village of Lancaster residents will be able to find answers to these and other questions quickly online.
It has taken more than 2 1/2 years of work, but village residents can look forward in this new year to having completely up-to-date village ordinances at their fingertips.
Planning Commission Chairman Jim Allein said that fine-tuning of the village code will continue over the next six months but that the major work of the project is now complete.
The commission combed painstakingly page by page through the old code to weed out old-fashioned references to privies, ash disposal and other archaic practices that no longer exist within the village, as well as certain inspections the village no longer oversees, Allein said.
As the code is finalized, various sections will continue to be brought before the Village Board for public hearings and approval, as was the recent pooper-scooper dog ordinance approved by the board in December.
Village dog owners, for example, are now legally required for the first time to clean up after their pets along village streets and in other public areas.
Village Clerk Mike Stegmeier told The Buffalo News he anticipated that the village’s Web master would make the new code accessible via a link online at the village Web site, www.lancastervillage.org , sometime within the next few weeks. Allein credited Community Development Director Jeff Stribing for bringing the code update project to the attention of the commission and pressing for the code to be overhauled.
