VILLAGE OF LANCASTER

$597,537 approved for fire truck

NEWS STAFF REPORTER

Story tools:

Lancaster’s Village Board voted, 4-0, Monday to authorize the purchase of a new $597,537 pumper to replace a 31-year-old piece of fire-fighting equipment.

After the vote — three trustees were absent— Fire Chief John J. Burke thanked the board and the new apparatus committee that researched the purchase.

The new truck, which will not be delivered to the Lancaster Volunteer Fire Department until next December, will be built by Sutphen Corp. of Amlin, Ohio.

It will replace Lancaster’s Engine No. 1, purchased in 1977 and refurbished in 1987 by Young Fire Equipment.

Burke said finding replacement parts for a vehicle three decades old has become increasingly difficult.

Mayor William G. Cansdale said he intends to assemble the Village Board early next year to determine how to finance the purchase. He said he personally prefers a 15-year bond issue.

The Village Board also:

• Allocated $39,360 from the general fund to buy a 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe with emergency equipment and detailing for the fire chief.

Only Joe Basil Chevrolet of Depew responded to the village’s request for bids.

• Adopted a revised dog ordinance as part of a reworked village code.

Dog owners now are legally required to pick up and dispose of dog waste on their own property and that of others.

This also applies to sidewalks, gutters, streets and other public areas.

• Approved a $2,500 contract with Young Explosives Corp. Display Fireworks of Rochester for New Year’s Eve fireworks display.

• Shored up the fire inspector’s budget, which had been depleted, by $7,800.
