Three new trails added to Cheektowaga nature preserve
Three new self-guided trails have opened at the Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve in Cheektowaga.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation dedicated the trails last week, including one in memory of Bruce Kershner, a local environmentalist who studied the forests on the preserve.
On the History Trail, visitors can explore the natural history of the woods while learning how Dr. Victor Reinstein and his family developed the nature preserve. The Footprint Trail relates unique features of Reinstein Woods to ways people can reduce their environmental impact.
The final trail, the Beech Tree Trail, was dedicated in memory of Kershner, who died last year. The highlight of the trail is the largest forest-grown beech tree in New York, known locally as the Champion Beech. Friends of Reinstein Nature Preserve have placed a bench in memory of Kershner near the beech.
The new trails join the two existing trails, and all are open to the public from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. Monday through Saturday, with longer hours during the summer months.
