CHEEKTOWAGA
Contract awarded for wireless system
A contract with Saia Communications approved Monday night by the Cheektowaga Town Board is expected to save the town tens of thousands of dollars per year as well as improve communication among government departments.
The board voted to purchase a wireless communications system from Saia, which will install it.
The system will eliminate the need for services currently provided by Verizon Wireless.
Saia’s contracted rate, which the board called a “preferred, discounted” rate, of $53,642.59 comes in at about $11,000 less than the New York State contract price list.
The company will install radio equipment and provide a reliable microwave communications channel as well as an intranet-type service among the town’s various departments.
The Chaffee-based Saia, which has offices on Stradtman Street in Cheektowaga, already has communications towers installed in Cheektowaga and other parts of Western New York.
The town’s Police Department currently uses a similar Saia system.
“This is a proven system we know will work smoothly,” Council Member James Rogowski said.
In other business Monday night, Citymade won approval to relocate operations from Cheektowaga to the Town of Tonawanda Empire Zone on Kenmore Avenue. The company had moved in 2005, but it needed the Town Board’s approval to take advantage of the tax breaks and incentives offered by the Empire Zone.
Citymade packages and markets specialty gift baskets of signature regional items, such as Weber’s mustard and Sahlen’s hot dogs.
