Recognizing the accomplishments of Western New Yorkers

Aaron Krolikowski of Glenwood, a senior who will graduate Phi Beta Kappa from the University at Buffalo this spring, has received a four-year Clarendon Scholarship from Oxford University, where he plans to complete his doctor of philosophy degree in development studies, an interdisciplinary program that draws from economics, anthropology and political science and policy.

He is the son of Allan and Louise Krolikowski of Glenwood, and a 2005 graduate of the Springville Griffith Institute. He was a 2008 Morris K. Udall Scholar and member of UB’s Honors College and was a finalist for both a 2009 Rhodes Scholarship and a 2009 Marshall Scholarship.

Krolikowski will receive his bachelor’s degree in political science and interdisciplinary social sciences in environmental studies from UB in May and will begin reading for his doctorate at Oxford in the fall.

He also has conducted extensive work with area environmental community groups, performed research with the UB Regional Institute, interned with the Environmental Protection Bureau of the state Attorney General’s Office and founded an agricultural development program in East Africa. A recent recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence, he also found time to sing and serve as an award-winning arranger with the Buffalo Chips, UB’s male a cappella vocal ensemble.

• The Buffalo Alliance for Education elected the following officers and members at their annual meeting: board president, Brian Biggie; first vice president, Heath Szymczak; treasurer Joan Allis; secretary Kirsti A. Hunt; also Diane Rowe, new board member. The Buffalo Alliance for Education is an independent not-for-profit organization established in 1992, whose mission is to strategically build and support relationships among business, community and schools to enhance and enrich student achievement in Western New York.

Karen S. Lamson was recently hired as a circuit librarian for the Hospital Library Services Program of the Western New York Library Resources Council, whose mission is enhancing access to information, encouraging resource sharing, and promoting library interests for its members that serve the people of Western New York. Lamson, who holds a master’s degree in library science, provides library services to such facilities as Brooks Memorial, Dunkirk; Eastern Niagara Hospital, Newfane and Lockport; TLC Health Network, Irving and Gowanda; and United Memorial Medical Center, Batavia. She has also served libraries at D’Youville College, Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo and Erie Community College, South Campus.

Michael Shaw, Frontier High School band director for the past 18 years, has been recently been named music director of the award-winning American Legion Band of the Tonawandas, Post 264. Shaw filled the position previously held by William Weikert who retired after 25 years of service directing the band. Shaw holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Fredonia State College and a master’s degree in woodwind performance from the University at Buffalo. Shaw has served the state School Music Association in the capacity of All-State Band chairman for four years. He has also served a three-year term as a director on the Erie County Music Educator’s Association Executive Board. In his first official performance as music director, Shaw will lead the band in a concert at 7:30 tonight at the historic Riviera Theatre, 67 Webster St., North Tonawanda.

Nicole Goyette served as director of Region 16 Odyssey of the Mind competition, held earlier this month in Medina Central Schools, with 33 teams from Lockport, Holley, Wilson, Medina, Niagara Wheatfield, West Seneca, Royalton-Hartland and DeSales Catholic School. The Region 16 tournament was sponsored by Orleans/ Niagara BOCES under Sue Tomaszewski from the Instructional and Technology Services Department, with help from assistant Dawn Fay. They look forward to the state competition Saturday in Binghamton.

• Genesee Community College inducted four new members to its Alumni Hall of Fame Wednesday in the Conable Technology Building, North Lobby at the Batavia Campus. “The Alumni Hall of Fame serves two important purposes,” said Patti Pacino, Alumni Affairs coordinator. “It recognizes the accomplishments of former students and their exceptional business and civic contributions. And it serves as an example for current students to see these highly successful alumni and know that their remarkable careers began right here at Genesee.” The Alumni Hall of Fame inductees are: Wanda Frank (class of 1997), currently a radio personality on WBTA 1490 AM radio in Batavia, who hosts her own show Wednesday mornings. She went back to school as an adult student to complete a degree in Theatre Arts from Genesee. She served for 10 years as the executive director of the Genesee Arts Council. She is active in local community theater, including Batavia Players, Rotary and Genesee Community College’s theater programs. Ellen (McCarthy) Ryan (class of 1976) was one of the first supporters of Genesee when it was established in 1965. She completed a registered nursing degree and worked to create hospice care, and continues to support its efforts. She is active with the Genesee Community College Foundation, as well as supporting two endowed scholarships, the Michael

T. Ryan Fund for the Future and the Michael T. and Ellen M. Ryan Scholarship for Excellence. Also, George E. Schaefer (class of 1976), who is active in the community, as well as Paula (Miller) Schaefer (class of 1979).
