Drilling to remain at helm of seminary

NEWS STAFF REPORTER

Story tools:

The interim president and rector of Christ the King Seminary in Aurora will stay on in a permanent capacity.

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec has appointed the Rev. Peter J. Drilling to succeed the Rev. Richard W. Siepka as head of the seminary, where 16 candidates for the Catholic priesthood and 145 lay students and deacons are receiving theological education.

Drilling has been a priest of the Diocese of Buffalo since 1967. His extensive background in higher education includes 26 years as a seminary professor.

He also has served in a variety of parishes in Cheektowaga, Depew, Buffalo and West Falls. Most recently, he was pastor of St. Anthony parish in Lackawanna, helping with the merger with the former Queen of All Saints parish in 1998.

“He has been extensively published and is well respected in the academic community. His pastoral skills will serve the seminary community well,” Kmiec said.

Last year, Christ the King, which originated near Olean as part of St. Bonaventure University, celebrated 150 years as a seminary.

Siepka served as president and rector for 12 years. Drilling had held the interim position since July.
