Black leadership group to host meeting on AIDS
Citing the disease’s role in destroying black families and taking a disproportionate toll on black men and women, the Black Leadership Commission on AIDS of Buffalo will host a community meeting at 6 p. m. Jan. 13 in Erie County Medical Center’s second-floor cafetorium.
The organization is calling on black clergy, community and civic leaders to play a stronger role in advocating for effective public policy in combating AIDS and HIV.
Pointing to pending state budget cuts to social service providers and the “pandemic’s” impact on black families, the commission is invoking the Kwanzaa principle of “ujima,” or collective work and responsibility, in calling on blacks to get more active in the fight against AIDS.
The ultimate goal is to inspire blacks to get tested and inspire the community to “take action on its own behalf” in stemming the spread of AIDS, the group said.
The commission is asking those who wish to attend the community meeting and reception to reserve a spot by calling Donna Chapman at 832-2088.
