SILVER CREEK

Board votes to sell reservoir parcel

SILVER CREEK — The land around the former Silver Creek reservoir in the town of Hanover will be put up for sale.

The Village Board voted unanimously Monday night to sell 191 acres at the site near Route 39.

Bids will be opened on Dec. 15.

Mayor Kurt Lindstrom said he hopes the property will be developed.

The village has not used the reservoir property in nearly 20 years, since water lines were installed connecting the reservoir to the Erie County Water Authority supply.

At the time, the reservoir was part of a system that had been in place for nearly 100 years and fed the village and some town residents through a gravity system. Issues with filtration and repairs needed to the dam at the site led local leaders to eliminate the reservoir as a supply and go to Erie County for water.

In other matters:

• The new local law on rental properties was approved. A public hearing on the topic was held last month.

The new law will require that all rental homes be inspected by the local code enforcement officer or a state or federal agency, and that a certificate of compliance be issued. Certificates will be issued free unless code violations exist.

• A plaque honoring the heroic efforts of Rick Serra was presented during the meeting.

Serra was called to the scene in May when a young boy fell off of a cliff near Christy Street. He took quick action to direct someone to call for help and then found a way down the embankment to be with the child until first responders could arrive.

Silver Creek Fire Chief Todd Anger was on hand for the presentation.
