Donated computers sought for military families

Story tools:

Veterans advocates are issuing an appeal to area residents receiving new computers as gifts this holiday season to consider donating their old computers to the families of military personnel so they can stay in touch with loved ones serving overseas.

“Many times telephone service on bases in the Middle East is uncertain and is often proven inadequate to meet the need. Because of the difficulties with the phone systems, troops are relying on e-mail communication more frequently,” said Carol Armstrong, military services coordinator at 2-1-1 WNY, a central referral service.

WNYmilitaryfamily.com, she said, has set up a program to try to held veterans’ families who need computers, adding that the potential exist for hundreds of residents to wind up with a surplus computer.

Contact WNYmilitaryfamily.com, its Web site, or by phone at 842-8613, Ext. 203, or call Peter Pilc at the Connecticut Street Armory, 888-5797.
