Car strikes woman; man accused of DWI

Story tools:

A Village of Hamburg man was charged with felony driving while intoxicated after his car struck a Buffalo woman who was walking along the Elmwood Avenue business strip about 5:20 p. m. Saturday.

David R. Zamojski, 48, of Mark Avenue, was convicted of a DWI offense previously, according to police records.

Zamojski was driving a Toyota Camry Solara south on Elmwood at West Delavan Avenue, where he hit Maria McAndrew, whose age was not listed, police said. She was taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center. Police Department spokesman Michael J. De- George said her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Zamojski walked up to an officer at the accident scene and said, “I was driving the car that hit the woman. I don’t have a license and I’ve been drinking. You gotta get me out of here,” according to the police report.

Police said he failed a sobriety test, then later submitted to a breath test that showed he was driving with a blood-alcohol content of 0.30, police added.

A person is considered intoxicated in New York with a reading of .08 or higher.

Police said there were four empty cans of beer in his car, along with unopened cans.

Zamojski also was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and driving an unregistered vehicle.
