World’s Largest Disco party sells out tickets in record time

Story tools:

Despite a hike in ticket prices, this year’s World’s Largest Disco party sold out in record time, according to organizers.

Buyers scooped up the last of the roughly 7,000 tickets to the highly anticipated, ’70s-themed event at 10 a. m. Wednesday, disco founder Dave Pietrowski said.

“This is the first time they sold out in the presale,” Pietrowski said.

Last year, a small number of tickets were made available to the general public, but they sold out within 20 minutes of going on sale.

Tickets this year went on sale at 10 a. m. Saturday, at $50 per ticket.

In a twist, organizers started selling tickets at the highest price. After two days, they fell to $45 per ticket. Tuesday, they were selling for $40 per ticket.

A couple of hundred tickets were available this morning, at $35 per ticket, before they ran out, Pietrowski said.

“The overwhelming majority were sold at $50,” he said.

People who had purchased tickets in previous years, earning them a spot on the disco’s mailing list, had first crack at tickets thanks to a presale code they received by mail and e-mail.

At least one person was selling this year’s presale code for $2.99 on the eBay auction Web site.

Pietrowski said this is unfortunate, but unknown numbers of people give away the access code to friends and acquaintances every year.

“I don’t feel great about it, but what can I do about it?” he said.

He added that people on the mailing list who wanted tickets shouldn’t have been affected by the eBay auction because they had four full days, plus Wednesday morning, to buy them.

Even though expenses for this year’s disco, set for Nov. 29, will be higher than in years past, organizers expect to raise a record amount of money for charity.

Proceeds from the event, which began in 1994, benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times.
