Collins, Ranzenhofer want GPS in county vehicles
Erie County Executive Chris Collins and Legislator Michael H. Ranzenhofer, R-Amherst, are proposing the installation of global positioning system technology in 200 county vehicles.
Once installed, the devices can be used to monitor a vehicle’s location, speed, mileage, idle time, unnecessary use and exhaust emissions, according to the county executive’s office. Being able to track such information has the potential to save hundreds of thousands of dollars in county fuel and maintenance costs, Collins added.
The Erie County Department of Budget and Finance estimates that a GPS tracking system could reduce Erie County fuel costs from $2.6 million to $2.2 million a year, a $400,000 annual savings.
