GPS used to track stolen wheelchair van
Police in three municipalities used global positioning systems to track a wheelchair van that had been stolen in Buffalo Monday morning.
The vehicle was stopped at 10:30 a. m. by Niagara County sheriff’s deputies on Transit Road in the Town of Lockport after being tracked through Cheektowaga, Amherst and Lockport.
Deputies said they detained the driver, Raymond L. Smith, 58, of Longview Avenue, and returned him to the Buffalo Police Department, where he was charged with criminal possession and unauthorized use of the vehicle.
The white Ford Econoline van was taken from 425 Michigan Ave., without the consent of the owner, Joseph Ieraci, president of Aries Transportation, police said.
