COUNTY LEGISLATURE
Turning off computers urged as energy-saver
An Erie County lawmaker has proposed that county workers turn off their computers at night and take other measures to save electricity.
“Erie County can save the taxpayers as much as $400,000 if the policies in my resolution are adopted,” said Legislator Michele M. Iannello, D-Kenmore, a State Senate candidate.
She called on employees to turn off computers when leaving work, turn off monitors when away from their desks more than 20 minutes and stop using “screen savers” because they don’t save energy.
Iannello has drafted a resolution for County Legislature action. Endorsing her effort is Frank J. Hotchkiss, co-chairman of the New York State Blue Green Alliance and chairman of the WNY Apollo Alliance, who said, “the cheapest, cleanest energy is energy we never use.”
County Executive Chris Collins said Monday he would like to see Iannello’s cost-saving analysis and added that turning electrical components off and on creates stress that can cost money in the long run.
