Talking on cell phone leads to drug arrest

Story tools:

An Ashland Avenue man faces charges after Northwest District officers pulled him over at about 11:10 p. m. Thursday for talking on a cell phone while driving and found marijuana in the vehicle, Buffalo police said.

Officers Jimmie Larke III and Thomas Sercu said they saw David A. Applewhite, 28, using a cell phone without a hands-free device while driving a 2008 Ford Explorer. They pulled him over at Niagara Street and West Delavan Avenue, where police said they found two bags of marijuana wedged between the driver’s seat and the console.

The SUV was a rental vehicle, and Applewhite did not have permission to drive it, police said, adding that Applewhite was driving with a suspended license because of 14 unpaid parking and traffic tickets.

He was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle while talking on a cell phone and possession of marijuana.
