Two widows of Continental Connection Flight 3407 victims joined government officials, Wegmans Markets and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on Thursday to announce May as “Love Knows No Boundaries” month throughout Western New York.

The song was written to raise funds for the Town of Clarence Flight 3407 Memorial Fund dedicated to Western New Yorkers affected by the Feb. 12 crash.

The song began as a Facebook exchange between friends two days after the crash that killed all 49 people on board and one person on the ground. Within two weeks, it developed into a song that was written, recorded and distributed through an all-volunteer group.

“I attended the debut of [the song] at Eastern Hills Wesleyan Church, and I can’t tell you how much the song, the CD and the work that was put into it means to me,” said Robin Tolsma, whose husband, Darren, was a passenger on the doomed flight.

“My husband isn’t here to tell me he loves me, but love knows no boundaries,” she said.

Jennifer West, whose husband, Ernie, was a passenger, was overcome with emotion as she tried to address the crowd that gathered at the Market Arcade for the announcement.

Tolsma had to finish West’s statement for her.

“We talked about what we were going to say. She wants to thank the community for reaching out to us. It’s very overwhelming. A bunch of people who don’t know us or know our families have come out to support this CD,” Tolsma said on behalf of her friend.

Throughout “Love Knows No Boundaries” month, Wegmans will be selling the CD for $10 at its nine Western New York locations, said Ann Mc- Carthy, spokeswoman for the grocery store chain. All of the proceeds will go to the fund.

Also, a tribute event will follow tonight’s Chuck Mangione concert with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in Kleinhans Music Hall. Starting at 10 p. m. with a live performance of “Love Knows No Boundaries,” the event will feature the CD, Clarence/Heart T-shirts and 3407 bracelets on sale. All of the proceeds will go to the fund.

Mangione had been scheduled to play with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in Kleinhans on Feb. 13, but the concert was postponed because two members of the jazz band had been aboard Flight 3407, which crashed on its way to Buffalo from Newark, N. J.
