Three Cheektowaga youths were arrested Thursday evening for allegedly starting a garbage can fire in Cheektowaga Town Park on Harlem Road, police said.

At about 8 p.m., police received a call about children setting fire to a trash can. Witnesses detained two of the youths until police arrived. Officers tracked down the other one, who had fled the park.

All three youths were charged with fifth-degree arson. They were released to their parents and are scheduled to return to Family Court at a later date.

Firefighters also put out a small fire in a portable toilet at the park that was set at about the same time as the trash can fire. It was not known whether the two fires were related.
