WRIGHTS CORNERS—One young man remained in Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo, on Thursday with injuries suffered Tuesday when gasoline exploded while they were working on a boat at 5659 Ridge Road.

Adam Kumm, 23, of Sixth Street, North Tonawanda, was in fair condition in ECMC’s intensive care burn unit with second-degree burns to his face and arms, while Jonathan Ludwig, 18, of the Ridge Road address, suffered burns on his arms and was discharged from ECMC on Thursday.

Joseph Woodring, 27, of Mead Street, North Tonawanda, was treated at ECMC for second-degree burns to his arms and released Tuesday.

Kumm told Niagara County sheriff’s deputies they removed the spark plugs from the engine of the 16-foot fiberglass boat, then tried to start it.

“It is likely that vapors built up in the engine compartment, and I am guessing that when they tried to start it a spark ignited the vapors,” said Interim Niagara County Fire Coordinator John Cecula.
