Fifth DWI offense nets man up to 3 years in prison
Updated: September 3, 2011, 6:28 AM
LOCKPORT—A man who picked up his fifth drunken driving arrest while chauffeuring friends home from a bar was sentenced to one to three years in state prison Thursday.
Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon Sperrazza imposed the term on Johnathon D. Godwin, 35, of Simmons Avenue, Niagara Falls.
He had pleaded guilty to felony driving while intoxicated.
He was arrested Sept. 3, 2010, at a police DWI checkpoint on River Road in North Tonawanda.
Defense attorney James J. Faso Jr. said Godwin was drinking at home when a friend called him from a bar and said he was too drunk to drive, so he asked Godwin to come for him and a companion. Godwin said yes.

If I heard correctly, had this drunk driver been arrested in Sweden with his record, he would have lost his car and his drivers license and served a very long time in prison.
I'd share some choice words with Judge Sara Sheldon Sperrazza if this guy injures someone in my family because the book didn't get thrown at him. I'd bet she would be pretty peeved if sixteen months from now when he's out for good behavior, and he goes out to the bar to celebrate his freedom, then drifts into oncoming traffic and takes out her whole family.
