Hospital airs new surgery center plans
Updated: August 21, 2010, 6:36 AM
Olean General Hospital announced plans Tuesday to build a $10.3 million, free-standing outpatient surgery center on the hospital campus at 500 Main St.
Features of the 22,000-square-foot facility, which will focus on a host of procedures that do not require an overnight stay, include four operating suites and three endoscopic suites. It also will include pre-operative and post-operative recovery areas, waiting rooms, consultation areas and support space.
The hospital currently performs more than 7,600 ambulatory surgical procedures each year.
“Because free-standing ambulatory surgery centers have become the standard of care for outpatient surgery, we want area patients to have access to this type of surgical facility,” Timothy J. Finan, president and chief executive officer of Olean General, said in a statement.
Finan also heads the Upper Allegheny Health System, the parent company of Olean General and Bradford (Pa.) Regional Medical Center.
Finan said the new building will allow patients to park next to the facility and avoid having to enter the hospital. The availability of a surgery center also is viewed as a boost in efforts to recruit new doctors, he said.
The New York State Health Department has approved the project.
A groundbreaking is expected in late September, with completion a year later.
